I dubbed it "a cross between City of God and Quiz Show".
A good movie, but none of the gang I went with thought it was as good as has been advertised or as the Oscars treated it. It's a 4 out of 5 star film, but not the "Oh my gawd, it's the best film ever made" it's often portrayed as.
The love story was predictable even to the point of understanding early on that it didn't make a hoot of a difference whether he won the dough at the end or not. The first 2/3 of the film, following the very unlikely adventures of the three musketeers, left me with the sole idea that "yeah... I get it..... living in India really sucks."
But well made, even if the soundtrack was very loud and clangy.... irritatingly so. Good cinematography, and a really creepy guy as "the MC."
I certainly didn't feel like I wasted my money... but I won't see it again.
The was not as great as the hype.
I'd give it a 2.5/5.
I liked the format the story was told as it related to the interrogation/game show, but thought the story about the little kids was more provocative and that's what I wanted to see more of.
That was a long 2 hours.
Like UC, I won't watch this again.
Hey Louis, have you seen City of God?
Yes I have. It was a much better film than this one. One of the best foreign language films I've ever seen.
I suspect Slumdog had a better impact when it was an unhyped 'Indie x Bollywood' -- I can't count how many movies (and books and restaurants and wine and people) have failed to live up to pumped-up expectations for me. Nevertheless, I thought it was a remarkable flick.
All other things aside, I agree... just not the 2nd coming of......
Just watched Forrest Gump on HBO today, and I can't believe the similarities.
Gumpdog Millionaire, no doubt.
Huh? Please elaborate.
Both stories told from the ending.
Both were victims of violence. Both because of who they are (religion and disability).
Both kids grew up together with the boy always having loved the girl.
Both boys go crazy when somebody gets after the girl. Generally ending in a fight.
Both overcome major adversity to succeed and to get the girl.
Both accompanied by a soundtrack that was important to the film.
Only difference being Forrest Gump is a hunky dorey type of film and the other is a darker version.
Made me laugh when yesterday. Maybe more so because of my wife enjoyed it and I was giving her a hard time about what I felt were similarities.
Sorry Louis, you could fit most movies into your "similarities."
Heck, you might be able to fit Brokeback Mountain in those.
For a Gump ripoff, see Benjamin Button
That's as big a reach as I've ever seen. But kudos for coming up with it.
Wife and I saw this yesterday and we loved it.
It has a little bit of everything:
An action story.
A love story.
A villain. (A couple)
A strange and distant land.
A triumphant journey.
A rags to riches story.
Current pulp phenomena - (Millionaire)
I could go on and on.
This picture just nails it.
