The Trump administration just told a whopper about the size of the federal workforce

President Trump on Monday signed an executive order instituting a hiring freeze on all nonmilitary federal employees. At a press briefing, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said that the move “counters the dramatic expansion of the federal workforce in recent years.”

In both raw-number and percentage terms, this is an inaccurate statement. According to numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 2.8 million employees on the federal payroll as of December. The number has risen slightly since May 2014, when there were roughly 2.7 million federal employees (part of the reason may be an accelerated pace of hiring in anticipation of a new presidential administration). That represents an increase of about 3 percent.

By contrast, the total civilian workforce, excluding federal employees, grew by about 4.9 percent over the same period.

In raw-number terms, the number of federal employees is nearly the same today (2.8 million) as it was when Barack Obama took office (2.79 million). It is also similar to the number of federal employees at the end of the Clinton administration (2.75 million) and lower than at any time during the Reagan administration (when it peaked at 3.15 million).

But as a share of the total civilian workforce, in percentage terms, the federal workforce is smaller than it's been in nearly 70 years.

Well he did say at his press briefing today that sometimes they will disagree with the facts.

So the dramatic expansion is incorrect but at the same time, it may be good to freeze federal hiring while we get our budgets in check. I dont know if this team can balance the budgets well without destroying things but it is more my type of economics to say lets stop spending and focus on how we spend before we allow any more spending.

LOL. Actually he did say that sometimes they will disagree with facts though. I think he meant to say disagree on the facts but it's impossible to tell with the alternate reality they live in.

They need to say it in those terms then. Trump and team need to learn about the concept on nuance. Everything isn't either the greatest ever or the worst ever.

No.... he is telling a friggin' lie.... and he is reducing the size of the federal workforce. If you are going to cut the size of the workforce, then say it. If you are simply going to not have any new job positions, then say that. Either way, this action is all politics and virtually no substance in budget reduction action.

But there are reasons to not make this blanket freeze (aging workforce, technology expansion, etc..) and the "freeze" has essentially been in place all along by the Socialist.

Chris is right though, you need to call a lie a lie.

Just need Billy Madison there to state "no they didn't"

"But you could imagine if they did, right?"

yeah, so he is full of crap but its not a bad idea to continue to not increase the federal workforce while our debt is still increasing annually. Fine with me. It would be nice if they had tact and nuance in explanations but I guess they feel the need to sensationalize everything.

The "Alternative facts" line slayed me. I know I shouldn't laugh, but I just can't believe how they keep getting away with saying those sort of things.

There is nothing suggested by this incoming administration that points to a balanced budget unless one believes that tariff walls are the long term answer.

Whats interesting is I dont even call these "lies". What he and Conway, and anybody who represents Trump does. Because I feel like "lie" is too flippant. What they are doing is way bigger than lying.

I think a more accurate description is "Strategic Fabrication"

Because they are trying to rewrite history now, and in the future. If they are successful, then in 50 years, humanity will look back and 100% believe that Trumps inauguration was the biggest attended event ever. They will have reshaped time and the universe.

A little thing now, but we are only on day 1. What about several years from now?

Heres a fun example of "Strategic Fabrication"

This demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the federal budget. The kinds of programs that the GOP always target as "waste" are a tiny fraction of overall spending.
