Puss in Boots to Get His Own Movie
    Source: Variety
    November 19, 2004

Variety says that DreamWorks has hired writers Ed Decter and John Strauss to pen the animated film Puss in Boots, based on the popular Antonio Banderas-voiced character from Shrek 2. The trade says the studio is contemplating a direct-to-video release.

The storyline is unclear at this point, but Banderas is likely to return to voice Puss in Boots. Decter and Strauss wrote Disney's The Lizzie Maguire Movie and the upcoming Fox feature Rebound, from director Steve Carr. They are also writing and producing The Jane Plan at Disney.

DreamWorks Animation is also working on a third and fourth installment in the "Shrek" series. The principal voice actors are expected to return for the films, including Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz as the newlywed green ogres, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Banderas as Puss in Boots.

    Steinberg Writing Puss in Boots
    Source: Variety
    February 25, 2005

DreamWorks has hired screenwriter David H. Steinberg (Slackers, American Pie 2) to write the animated film Puss in Boots, based on the character voiced by Antonio Banderas in Shrek 2, reports Variety.

Banderas will return to voice the spinoff, which is part of DreamWorks' slate for 2008. The trade says it is unclear at this point whether the title will receive a theatrical release or go directly to DVD.

However, Steinberg's six-figure deal suggests the studio has an interest in making a run at a theatrical release.

Steinberg is writing the remake of MGM's Love at First Bite as well as Other People's Wishes for Warner Bros. Pictures.

See, this is different than the whole "remake" debate. I think the fact that there will be a spinoff is a credit to the writers and the voice actor to make a character that people like enough to have its own spinoff. Worked for Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days, Mork & Mindy, and Frasier! :)

It was okay. I think it tried way to hard to be cute. The Pixar movies, Shrek and Kung Fu Panda seemed to get it right. The later Shrek movies seemed to try to hard like this one did. I liked it a lot more than the last two Shreks but it could have been a whole lot better.
