I went through this with my now 26 year old about 2 years ago. We got her into BAART after trying a few other places. She has been off of it now for over a year but is still taking methadone. At BAART she sees a counselor & a Dr & they do drug testing to make sure you aren't using. She lives at home & recently has started working again. It's a long process but things do get better.

This is part of addiction that just blows. I had to cut 2 of my brothers loose. They hated me for it, how can I desert my blood relatives?, I'm oh so uppity now that I got clean, he's too good for us now... etc. One is now dead, the other close to it. You just can't be part of the life they choose or you'll get sucked further in.

I feel for all you guys so much. I know it's heartbreaking.

I'm so saddened to hear all this. I wish I knew some great advice to give you but I'm at a loss. If you just need somewhere to vent and/or listen, I'm right here.

Well, update on my situation. My daughter has decided to enter a rehab facility. Crossing my fingers, hoping it sticks. Trying to find a place that works with my insurance/how my insurance operates has been tricky but we did find one today. Hoping to have her in very soon.

One thing I didn't suggest to you, that I strongly do, is Al-Anon. It's not an answer to your son's problems, but it can be a godsend for yours. I would recommend committing to going to, say, 15 meetings. The first few you may feel out of place, not get a whole lot out of it at first, etc. The more you go, though, the more you'll get. After 15, I'd say you will probably have a good handle on if you're benefiting. It will help you with how to deal with your son--setting boundaries and feeling ok about them, etc.

Good luck to both of you, Linder. I’ve dealt with this with my younger brother for the past 12 years. Pills turned in to heroin use. Having somewhat worked in the field, I was able to get him in to several different residential programs, only to have him get kicked out after a couple of days. He’s since gone down the law enforcement path, several stints in prison, on parole, etc... Still uses, lives on and off the street. I have minimal contact with him now. Tough life. Hard disease to treat.

I hope she’s able to shake it. Hopefully the rehab will stick. The detox is the hardest part, followed by severing your friends/connections.

Dutchman, I was rereading this thread and your post struck me as particularly heart-rending reading it again. I too feel helpless, another of my brothers was diagnosed with liver cancer. Can't say it wasn't expected, I knew I'd get the call one day, but ungodly sad when it finally comes.

I should have known something was up because he sent me a Merry Christmas text. We were very close once, but I haven't had one from him in years.

You try your best but when the time comes, all you can do is mourn, let it go when you can, and take care of yourself. There is nothing to blame in my opinion, everyone chooses their own path.

I truly hope yours doesn't come to this.
