Baseball season in Arizona comes to an end

I'm really too bummed and sick about being swept by the Colorado Rockies to even comment much on the game or the series.

It probably would have been better had Arizona not scored three runs in the eighth inning to close to 6-4. The actual hope that we could come back made the entire night worse.

The guys tried, they played hard, but the Rockies are on fire and wont be denied. Eric Brynes said before the game that he would lead by example and that wound up being a check swing that actually hit the ball into the infield and ended the game with Chris Young on second base.

It was that kind of series.

Sunday will be a defining day for Arizona Sports.

First, the Cardinals take on the Carolina Panthers in a game featuring a pair of 3-2 teams. Then the D-Backs face the Rockies in game three of the NLCS.

The stakes are huge for both teams.

Arizona Diamondbacks teeter on brink of elimination

Yes, it's a best out of seven series, but going to Colorado for three road games doesn't bode well for the "Anyone, Anytime" Arizona Diamondbacks.

They certainly could have used SOMEONE tonight.

Arizona stranded 11 baserunners in the almost five-hour long contest. They had a couple of huge mistakes, an error on Mark Reynolds and a baserunning mistake by Stephen Drew in the 9th inning. Down 2-1 with just a single out, Arizona had Chris Young on third and Drew on 1st with Eric Byrnes at the plate.

Colorado Rockies already in trouble

Jeff Francis on the cover of Sports IllustratedThe Arizona Diamondbacks received a bit of help on Wednesday when the mother of all curses was announced as having been directed at the hottest team in baseball.

We should be relieved, it could have been the Dbacks. But I guess the fact that even compared to Colorado Rockies, Arizona is still the underdog.

Jeff Francis, the ace of the Colorado pitching staff, will be on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week.

Ouch.

Pundits Predict, I Flip a Coin...

Who is going to win the NLCS? The Diamondbacks, with the National League's best record of 90-72, or the Colorado Rockies, who took one extra game to reach the 90-win plateau?

On Defense, the Rockies get the edge, with a higher fielding percentage (.989), than the D-Backs' (.983). The Rockies were the best defensive team in the majors while the D-Backs were #17.

In Pitching, the D-Backs hold the edge. Anchored by Brandon Webb, the D-Backs were #7 in team ERA (4.13), while the Rockies were #14 (4.32).

The Rockies clearly hold the advantage in hitting, where their team batting average of .280 is well above the .250 average posted by the D-Backs.

Plus, there is that whole run-differential thing the pundits are still touting. Looking at the stats, the Rockies are clearly favored to win this series. They are the hottest team in baseball and can clearly out-hit and out-field the D-Backs.

So why am I not scared by this team? Let's look at the intagibles.

Why The Cubs Deserved to Lose

Some sicko skinned a goat and hung it from the Harry Caray Statue at Wrigley. Cubs fans were outraged...that it didn't reverse the curse. Any doubt that class has left the "friendly confines" is all but gone. Even the toolbag Jay Mariotti was more disgusted that this heinous act didn't help the "beloved" Cubbies. The video is on YouTube, but I refuse to go looking for it.

Just because $300 million can't buy a clutch hit and/or pitch, an innocent animal has to die? I guess we should be thankful theykiller didn't go after Bartman, huh?

D-Backs dump Da Cubs, rest up for Rockies

Livan Hernandez looked like Livan Hernandez and the D-Backs hitters looked like they'd swung a bat before, finishing off the Cubs in a 5-1 NLDS series-sweeping win in Chicago.

Another Win!

The D-Backs beat the crap out of the Cubs (who?) for the second night in a row in Chase Field. The Flubs were awful and deserved the ridicule of the entire MLB.

The D-Backs watered down the area around home plate before the game. Lou complained, so the Diamond Sod was distributed to make the game fair. The D-Backs still rocked the Cubs.

The fans were awesome. The team was soild. The opposition sucked.

Is that D-Backs Baseball 0r what?

True or false: 7 good D-Backs questions

Don't understand how the D-Backs (A) made the playoffs (b) won the NL West or (c) hold a 1-0 playoff lead over the Cubs? This T/F questionnaire should answer all the lingering questions you have:

Game 2 Pitching Matchup

Last night, Brandon Webb proved to be the better man and outlasted Cubs' Ace, Carlos Zambrano. Both pitchers threw less than 90 pitches, but Webb had a full inning of work more than Zambrano. That was key because while the D-Backs were able to bridge the game to Valverde with Lyon, the Cubs' reliever Marmol collapsed under the pressure.

Doug Davis

Doug Davis - Arizona DiamondbacksThe D-Backs #2 pitcher has struggled in his last few outings but has generally been solid since the All-Star Break. He knows the Cubs, having come from the Brewers last year. He believes his late-season struggles came from a mechanical flaw that tipped his curve-ball to the hitters. After watching film, he corrected the problem before his final outing of the season. He gave up 2 runs in five innings before being lifted for a pinch hitter.

Davis has had success against the Cubs. He is 7-5 lifetime against them and 5-2 since 2005. His latest victory against Chicago came in August, when he out-dueled Ted Lilly in Chase Field. Soriano has had some success against Davis, but Lee and Ramirez have both struggled against him.
