David Stern still a fool
November 9, 2007 by Mike Olbinski
Props to the Phoenix media. I mean, seriously…props to you.
David Stern came to town to announce that Phoenix won the 2009 NBA All-Star game and instead of treating him nice and staying on topic, the local personalities took no prisoners and grilled Stern in their first chance to see him since the suspensions of Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw.
And Stern did nothing to help his image here.
When asked about the suspensions and losing that game, Stern, in all of his completely idiotic arrogance responded:
“There were two more games if I remember correctly, and the Suns lost them both, right?”
Not good and not smart.
The attitude of this guy, after the biggest scandal in sport with the Tim Donaghy cheating fiasco, amazes me. You’d think he’d have been humbled enough to see the error of his ways. To see that maybe he should shut his mouth and apologize for what happened.
But no, he had to be combative in his answer to the question.
I truly wonder how long it will be until David Stern can walk the streets of this town and not get ridiculed, booed and harassed. 5 years? 10 years? Never?
I vote for never.
Even at this NBA All-Star game…depending on how many locals get to go to the game, he will definitely hear the boos there. And rightfully so.
You can’t make an absolute decision about two suspensions and then turn around and become a wishy-washy leader in deciding to ignore your referee rules when it comes to gambling and not expect consequences.
He just looks like a fool. This is why the NBA sucks sometimes and people think it’s fixed. Heck, some of the games WERE fixed we now see and still he acts unapologetic.
The rule about leaving the bench was found so totally outdated this past post-season, yet the NBA and Stern decided that it was fine and didn’t need any changing.
What? Didn’t the whole sports world make it quite evident that the suspensions were unfair and unneeded? It ruined the integrity and competitiveness of your playoffs. It seems to me that a rule to be found that wrong by that many people would be looked at and changed.
But not here…not in the wonderful NBA.
And now we get this All-Star game. I guess it was decided it would be here before Game 4, but it still feels like Stern is trying to make up for his mistake.
I’m sorry, but an All-Star game doesn’t come close to cutting it. Who wants it anyways, after what happened in Las Vegas last time?
No, I want a championship and those suspensions back. And you can give us the All-Star game for the next 25 years and it wont make a difference.

David Stern is a fool? You’re being polite!
David Stern is at the top of what’s wrong with the NBA. I don’t think he understands how precarious the state of the NBA is. Ratings are down and have been, people are tired of the thug, gansta, attitude of many of the players, and then add the game fixing scandal of last year. Stern needs to take a hard look at his league, it’s a mess.
Seriously, the NBA is on the brink of collapsing. Too many players commit terrible crimes off the court and get a slap on the wrist by the NBA. If I was arrested for possession of drugs or weapons, somehow I don’t think I’d get a great job in the future or be able to go after a law degree which I plan to do.
The one thing I’ve loved about Colangelo and now Sarver, is that we don’t stand for that image. You commit a crime, we trade your @ss no matter what. Remember Kidd beat his wife and he was gone. Wasn’t Starbuy arrested and we traded him off as soon as we could?
Basically, the NBA needs to step up like Goodell is doing and hand down punishments that are fitting. Caught with drugs? Thats a 20 game suspension for the first offense. Caught again? That’s a 41 game suspension. Caught a third time? Yearlong ban and lifetime after that.
Caught with guns, first time 1 year ban. Second time banned for life.
Of course, unless you are a star and make the NBA money, then it’s a 5,000 fine, and you are benched, for tip off before coming in next stop in play.
I just hope the Suns keep good players, not good on the court, good off the court like they do now. I truly think that Sarver is the type that will only keep good people on his team.
As for Stern, I someday hope to run into him wearing my Stoudemire jersey and pimp slap the hell out of him.
You had me until you used the sentence “to myself, he looks like a fool”
Bad, bad grammar
Thanks BIM!
And I fixed it, so go read the rest
Good commentary.
Amen Bro. He must have studied the hypocratic oath.
David Stern is a fool. Great article, Mike. Fun to read.
