Two veteran QB’s being tried out
October 9, 2007 by Mike Olbinski
According to AZCentral, Vinny Testaverde and Tim Rattay will be brought into Arizona Cardinals’ camp today in order to try out for backup quarterback job behind Kurt Warner.
Testaverde is nearing 44 years old while Rattay is a comparatively young 30.
The Cardinals are waiting for a second examination on Matt Leinart’s collarbone, but they fear he could be lost for the entire season.
With Warner’s history of injuries, this backup quarterback isn’t a laughing matter.
Vinny would provide much needed experience to that position, especially if he were to be thrown right into the fire without a ton of practices under his belt.
Whisenhunt said yesterday: “With only one healthy quarterback right now on the active roster and the way the league’s going right now, there’s a good chance that this guy will have to see some playing time.”
Center Al Johnson, offensive coordinator Todd Haley and Whisenhunt all have ties to Testaverde in various capacities.

Hard to believe that Vinny could be playing here.
There is an interesting video interview with Rattay on the AZCentral page linked to in the above article!
Of the two, Rattay and Testaverde, I would go with Rattay! Testaverde is too old! The last season Rattay played any he had an 88.2 QB rating, 4 TD’s, 2 INT’s.
Nice stats…perhaps that youngness would be good for us.
I’m surprised he isn’t on a team, I thought he had some promise.
I think Rattay is a logical back-up, but seriously Vinnie? The guy is 44! If the Cards sign Vinnie, I’m trying out. I’ll only be 43 later this month. Please let’s put Vinnie out to pasture, his best days are far far behind him.
They have to go with Rattay, it’s a logical choice. Vinny has too much experience and isn’t fast enough with this offensive line. Vinny would be logical if we needed someone that might need to play in 2 weeks so that’s a huge consideration that he knows a lot about the offense already. We’re not looking for a long term backup, just a short term one.
But what happened to Shane Boyd? Didn’t we keep him on our practice squad?
