Lose the monkey
October 5, 2007 by Mike Olbinski
I still see it there. That pesky monkey. Smack dab on the back of the Arizona Cardinals.
This young and up-and-coming franchise is at a crossroads this week against the St. Louis Rams. An 0-4 team in disarray who are now down to backups at the quarterback and runningback positions.
Arizona barely lost to San Francisco, almost beat Baltimore and had huge wins against Seattle and Pittsburgh. They have played well and seem to be getting better as the season goes on. They are a good team.
But now they need to prove it.
Last season they got to Chicago and played an amazing game, only to lose it and their confidence the rest of the way. This week is the same thing in a different form.
You can beat the pants off the Rams and go 3-2 and show the world that your position in the power rankings isn’t a joke. You can show the fans that this is not the same old Cardinals team that they’ve lived with for so long.
But mostly, they can prove to themselves how good they can be. This is a must-win game in my eyes, but it’s also a game they SHOULD win. There is no doubt about that.
Disaster could lie in the scary words “let down”. After a huge Pittsburgh win, who knows how much of a let down there will be, if any. I know Isaac Bruce has guaranteed a win for the Rams, so that should be motivation enough.
It’s time to get that stupid monkey off their backs. Time to end the losing and ring in the era of winning.

This will also be posted in the power rankings post, but here’s another one that has them at #10 as the Sleeper Du’Jour.

Wow, awesome…and I love Bill Simmons too. Great link.
This game is huge for us, it’s definitely a must win for one reason, the Rams are on life support right now and we need to pull the plug on them. Whiz isn’t going to let his team overlook them so I’m not worried. The only X-factor is Gus Frerotte. How will he come out and play. It’s tough for the D to prepare for him since he hasn’t played so they don’t have much game footage other than preseason.
Okay, with the exceptional Run D that the Cardinals have right now, the Defense needs a nickname.
My suggestion is The Big Red Brick Wall. That’s just as fitting because they are solid and it’s an homage to the steel curtain D of the 70’s. I will have a sign out Sunday.
