Cards rise to new heights in power rankings

Date October 3, 2007 by Mike Olbinski

Aside from 1998 when the Arizona Cardinals went to the playoffs for the first and last time since coming to this freaking hot state, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them ranked higher than 25 on any “official” power rankings anywhere.

That changed this week. And some of the results are high enough to scare the crap out of me and make me worry seriously about jinxes and knocking on wood and stuff.

Here are some of the top ones and you tell me what you think. Awesome or do you wish we could fly under the radar a bit longer?

  1. Dr. Z’s Rankings on CNNSI. Wow, #10.
  2. Yahoo’s Jason Cole. He puts Arizona at #12
  3. MSNBC.com. Also puts the Cards at #10. Up from 18th. They note that Arizona is the only team in the league with two wins over teams with winning records. Wow.
  4. ESPN’s rankings. Arizona is 15th on their rankings, up from 22. A big jump, but come on! The others have us 12th and higher!
  5. Sportsline.com’s Pete Prisco. Also #12 here

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this historic rise to the top. I only pray that they beat the Rams this Sunday.

That last line of your post is all that means anything - ‘What they do on Sunday!’

The game vs. Pittsburgh was big. The game vs. St. Louis is important!!!

I totally agree…if we don’t win on Sunday, the power ranking God will laugh at us and we’ll once again be the same ol’ Cards. We need to take care of it now.

We seem to say it every week but this is a huge game coming up. We win and I think think the Cards can go on a huge roll.

We win and it means 3-2, which is better than 2-3. It also matters how we win and how Leinart plays.

I do agree, a road win is sorely needed.

They’re off to a good start, esp for the ‘Cards, but ESPN is probably closest to the truth. At least so far.

Another test on Sun, but more importantly they need to solve the QB by committee situation. If they are going to take the next step, they’ll do it with one QB.

I love the two QB system and Sunday is a big game for Leinart. Leinart needs to pass the ball with confidence this weekend. If he can do that, he’ll end up solidifying himself as the starter. I don’t mind having a two QB system for one reason, defenses have to prepare for two offenses, instead of just one. That’s to our advantage. Let it ride until Matt can handle both.
