Baseball season in Arizona comes to an end

Date October 15, 2007 by Mike Olbinski

I’m really too bummed and sick about being swept by the Colorado Rockies to even comment much on the game or the series.

It probably would have been better had Arizona not scored three runs in the eighth inning to close to 6-4. The actual hope that we could come back made the entire night worse.

The guys tried, they played hard, but the Rockies are on fire and wont be denied. Eric Brynes said before the game that he would lead by example and that wound up being a check swing that actually hit the ball into the infield and ended the game with Chris Young on second base.

It was that kind of series.

I agree this one is tough. I think we all had bigger hopes for the d-backs this year and I for one would rather have lost to the Cubs or Phillies than the Rockies, but it wasn’t to be.

But big kudos to our ‘baby-backs’ who really overachieved this year. All the talking heads kept saying (and still are) that this team will be better next year and be a factor for years to come. I think that will be the case. In the meantime we got to ride into the playoffs as division champs and then swept the Cubbies. Sadly, we had to face the Rockies next who are just on one of those runs where they could easily win it all. It just wasn’t meant to be this year.

Hopefully, the d-backs pick up a pitcher or two and maybe another bat in the offseason and be back ready in the spring. Until then, thanks D-backs for a great season, it was a great ride!

As much as I love this ‘baby-backs’ team I think a big problem is not having a hitter that pitchers fear every time he comes to the plate. To go along with that the clean up spot needs to be filled, it’s not a spot in the lineup that can rotated. With Hudson and Tracy healthy next year maybe the lineup will look a lot better, but the signing of a superstar might be what the diamondbacks need (and I’m not talking about past failures like shawn green, sexton, or randy johnson,)

Hey, we’ll still have Randy next year :)

I agree though, would be nice to have a big time slugger in there. But who knows…Chris Young, Upton, etc, could turn into that. Ryan Howard I believe basically came out of nowhere right? A young rookie who just started slamming home runs.

Just glad it wasn’t the Padres, Dodgers or Giants. I hate the Rockies the least. They do need to sign a good starting pitcher and a bat in the offseason to contend. The other thing they need to do is run defensive drills at spring training, nothing but defensive drills.

Yeah, I agree at least the Rockies did it. And I’ll probably cheer them on in the World Series.

Mike Olbinski… Ryan Howard didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. He was a lot like Prince Fielder in the sense that he lived up to his potential. You should probably have Micah Owings play 3B or left field so he can hit 4th. That dude can rake.

Thanks Mark, maybe it’s my lack of attention to other teams, but I guess that’s true. He lived up to his potential.

I also I don’t know enough about our prospects…isn’t Upton supposed to have power? Couldn’t he live up to his potential?

As far as hating the rockies the least of the nl west teams, I most definitely agree, but at the same time I’m hoping the dbacks can form a fiery rivalry with the rockies. The dbacks don’t really have a rival and itd be nice to see a rivalry develop to spark some hatred toward those rockies. Why you might ask? Because rivalries are what excite sports fans, rivalries are what sell out crowds and cause water bottles to be thrown onto fields and clear the benches for fights. Yankees Red Sox, Oh. St. Michigan. Army Navy. Dodgers Giants. Though some may say, “oh we’re classy sports fans and we don’t want to see AZ fans behaving that way.” To which I say, It’s really not that bad and could be exactly what the dbacks need to develop a reputation among their fan base, not to mention the ability to sell out crowds regardless of ticket price of their team makes the LCS.
