A bit of Sun Devil history
October 19, 2007 by Adrian Vender
As we wait another week before the ASU Sun Devil football team heads into the real meat of their schedule, I decided to do a little research over at the ASU athletic site. The Sun Devil football team is undefeated through their 1st 7 games this season and below is a list of the other 6 seasons where the Sun Devils were undefeated through their 1st 7 games, at least as early as the Frank Kush era. I’ve included their ending season record, coach, usual QB, bowl game info and the result of the Duel of the Desert.
1996: 11-1
Coach: Bruce Snyder
QB: Jake Plummer
Bowl: Rose Bowl vs. Ohio State (Loss) 17-20
Nov 23 Arizona (Win) 56-14
1986: 10-1-1 ***Tied 3rd game of the season, Sep 27 vs. Wash St. 21-21
Coach: John Cooper
QB: Jeff Van Raaphorst
Bowl: Rose Bowl vs. Michigan (Win) 22-15
Nov 22 Arizona (loss) 17-34
1982: 10-2
Coach: Darryl Rogers
QB: Todd Hons
Bowl: Fiesta Bowl vs. Oklahoma (Win) 32-21
Nov 27 Arizona (Loss) 18-28
1975: 12-0
Coach: Frank Kush
QB: Dennis Sproul
Bowl: Fiesta Bowl vs. Nebraska (Win) 17-14
Nov 29 Arizona (Win) 24-21
1973: 11-1
Coach: Frank Kush
QB: Danny White
Bowl: Fiesta Bowl vs. Pittsburgh (Win) 28-7
Nov 24 Arizona (Win) 55-19
1970: 11-0
Coach: Frank Kush
QB: Joe Spagnola
Bowl: Peach Bowl vs. North Carolina (Win) 48-26
Dec 5 Arizona (Win) 10-6
The one sure thing I can gather from this is that none of these historical teams royally tanked after this point of the season. All of these teams ended up having 2 losses or less. However, with Cal, Oregon, UCLA, USC, UofA and a bowl game ahead of them, it will be no easy task to keep that loss column to 2 losses or less. It should be noted that none of these historical seasons were 13 game seasons.
What do you guys think? Any distinct trends we should be looking at? Does the crazy Duel in the Desert with the Arizona Wildcats factor into a bowl game prediction? Can ASU go all the way? Seriously, that would involve a win at Autzen Stadium.

I guess the thing that jumps out at me is with the exception of the Kush years, all those teams got beat by U of A. Hopefully, that can be avoided this year.
Of the remaining schedule Cal and Oregon scare me the most, but as we’ve seen…on any given Saturday, anything can and does happen.
Go Devils!
