Congrats Mercury!

Date September 16, 2007 by Mike Olbinski

I know we don’t talk about the Phoenix Mercury much on ASFN, mainly because the number of fans who support them here are few, but they deserve a mention today.

A professional sports team in Arizona has just won their first ever WNBA Championship in five games against the Detroit Shock. The final score was 108-92. They are the first ever WNBA team to win a championship despite being the road team.

Congratulations to the Mercury!

It was a great season. The fans were great, the front office did their job, the players gave all they had. They really deserved it. Cappie was amazing and she should be proud of how she performed out there.

If Penny somes back, it could be a very successful half decade for this franchise.

Oh and it was nice to see Sarver at least smile once….really what’s with those sunglasses, yeesh.

I used to watch a few of their games when I covered the Suns…I think I got asked to cover them a few times and I enjoyed the games a lot.

I haven’t paid much attention this year…but it kind of amazed me when I’d read the box scores after these wins and not find Turasi’s name as the top scorer all the time. Penny and some others seemed to be more of the stars. Is that how it really is during the regular season?

Well, Taurasi is our best player, but all three put up very similar stats. It’s a well-balanced trio. It’s not like the Suns were each person does their own thing but also have big weaknesses, with Nash being the clear #1 player and option in the 4th. Any one of these woman can take over a game and put up some great, all-around stat lines.
