Bring on the crazy

Date September 17, 2007 by Mike Olbinski

Edgerrin JamesSo Seahawk fans are calling the Cardinals lucky. That if some inexplicable, totally outrageous and hardly fathomable event hadn’t taken place, we’d never have won that game. That is the only possible explanation for what happened.

To that I say: Welcome to our world!

That kind of thing is commonplace around here. And if it goes in our favor for once, no one is going to complain. The fans got loud, Alexander thought he heard an audible and then he and Hasslebeck decided to do a little dance, forgetting to take the ball with them.

You think that’s crazy? On the list of “crazy” that has happened to the Cards, that wouldn’t make the Top 25. No, that fumble wasn’t as amazing as Seattle fans think.

What’s truly and utterly crazy is that Edgerrin James is 5th in the NFL in rushing yards after two weeks. His stat line read 24 carries for 128 yards in Sunday’s game. You get used to seeing numbers like that from other teams.

Not here. Not for a long time. Watching the end of that game and seeing Edge rip off runs of six yards, and seven yards, to get Arizona into field goal range was beyond belief. It was exhilarating and baffling at the same time.

Are the Cardinals actually running the ball?

I’ve never seen their running game look as great as it did yesterday. They were overpowering the defensive line and creating gaping and massive holes. James almost needed a map to figure out which hole to take on some plays. “This one looks good, but man, that other one looks REAL good…hmmm” and so on.

In the land of crazy, we’ve seen it all. But this crazy…this crazy running game…well, I’m going to enjoy it.

Bring on more crazy.

This squad has without a doubt come a long way since teams were surprised that Coach McGinnis hadn’t changed their audible signals since the last time they played!

The Arizona Cardinals team that we saw Sunday was dramatically different from any squad this city had seen in a long time. The good news is that this team is 1-1 and hasn’t begun hitting on all cylinders yet. When Branch comes back to spell Watson on defense and Leinart gets his feet under him (literally and figuratively), the sky could be the limit for this team.

2nd in the NFC West… with a bullet!

Seattle is a good team. We beat them at their own game. Power running and timely passing, solid play calling, and swarming defence with contributions all around. No this is no surprise. The hags had big Mo on their side for awhile as happens in this league, but if you want to call it luck, go ahead. We played our butts off and put ourselves in that position and it swung our way.
Yes Seattle is a good team, but we played them evenly as we have done many times over the past few years as they have been winning division titles. But be careful hags, you just might have real competion now, really.

More like if the Seattle D wouldn’t have let the Cardinals ram it down their throats following the fumble. Four straight times the same play for 22 yards!!!

Solid, physical line play on both sides of the ball - who woulda thunk it.

What I think (and definitely hope) is that this team won’t regress, but instead, under Coach Whisenhunt’s watchful eye, will consolidate its gains and continue to improve from here.

That’s one way championship teams are built.

Pass the pitcher of Kool-Aid please.

1. establish the run
2. stop the run
3. get to the qb

as i have stated many times, if this can be accomplished the rest of the pieces fall into place. and guess what…suddenly you (we) start to get lucky.

It was great to see how well the team ran on Sunday, but next week’s game against Baltimore will be a HUGE test. As the song says, “If you can do/make it here, you can do/make it anywhere”.

Edge is also the leading rusher in the NFC.

Some other notes, for those that said the ending was crazy:

We beat the Seahawks in rushing yards, passing yards and 3rd down conversion %. You do that game in and game out, and you will win more than you lose.

It’s a good start. Baltimore will be tough, no doubt…but I just want to see intensity.

I feel we are poised to beat Pittsburgh at home (Whis knows this team inside and out) and we have a good shot at Baltimore (Whis has faced them 12 times).

We may lose this weekend. And even the next…but the the first four were our toughest, IMO. If we come out of this 2-2 it will be fantastic. 1-3 isn’t even terrible as we should make that up and get back to .500 in a hurry.

At any rate, it is CLEAR that the mindset has changed in Arizona. Whisenhunt has brought Whinning Time to the Valley.
