I'm sure the Cardinal coaching staff is quite aware of the talents of each player on this squad. The Bidwill's pay this staff $$$$$ just for that purpose. Let's give Whiz a chance to get this thing in order. This is a new system and a new style that these players must adjust to. We'll be real lucky to be 2-2 after the first four games. This team will get better as the season progresses and certainly has a shot to go 500.

If you believe as I do that Antrel Rolle would excel in a modified role positioned on the outside eye of the TE, then I don't think there's any question he is one of the best 11 defensive players on the roster...he certainly is one of the 11 best tacklers on the team, in fact, I would rate him in the top four there...and he's the best blitzer we don't even know about yet because he's been stuck on an island at CB.

This defense would cater to the strenths of the personnel, particularly putting Bertrand Berry back at rush DE where he thrives. Everyone else is playing the same role in the defense except Rolle, whi, in essence, takes the place of Blackstock or Pace (neither of whom, is one of the best 11 players on defense...and neither of whom can hold Rolle's jock as a tackler).

This blog is completely on the right track. Kudos, Dream!

I reiterate my preference for a multiple hybrid defense with numerous different looks and 11 interchangeable parts on any given play. Within that framework, "bring 'em on!" - a 3-4-4, 4-3-4, 5-2-4, 3-2-5; heck! How about an 11-0-0.

It doesn't matter what the front is so long as all players, gaps and zones are covered by the 11 guys on the field (even if it means having the NT drop off to cover a shallow zone or A-Dub coming up to handle the responsibility normally handled by the Under Tackle).

The beauty in this is that opposing offenses won't know who's doing what on defense. (The important thing is that every Cardinal player know who's doing what).

I mentioned that it wouldn't be practical, but you think that putting the best 11 players on the field is a bad idea?

I also mentioned that it was a toss up between Rolle and Holt. You would be able to swap Rolle/Holt in this scenerio.

Disagree about almost everything but thanks for putting up a well thought out blog.

Changing schemes at the end of camp is impractical.

Agree with K9 about Rolle.

I don't think so either. You would try to keep them in for 1st and 2nd downs, or goalline defense only.

I just don't think you can keep Watson or Branch on the field for more than 60% of the total defensive downs. The whole idea of having both of them is that you can split the NT snaps 50-50 and keep them both fresh.

I also think that we're not going to see as much of Berry this season as many seem to think. I don't expect him to be on the field for much more than 60% of the defensive downs. He's going to be the pass rush specialist. Antonio Smith might be the better projection at the RDE position for now, with a nickel pass rush package of Berry-Branch/Watson-Cooper-Dockett.

What I'm really worried about with your projection is how we contain the outside run game. Roderick Hood especially is undersized at the CB position. At this point, the only thing indicating that Antrel Rolle is one of the 11 best offensive players is his draft spot. Terrance Holt has had more effectiveness in the NFL than Rolle has.
