Garnett traded
July 30, 2007 by Mike Olbinski
Well, the pain and suffering of Suns fans is finally over. Granted, most gave up on the idea of Kevin Garnett weeks ago, but a few of us held out hope. Since it had been so quiet for a good while now, and there was no way Garnett would be playing in Minnesota next year, it stood to reason that the Suns still had a shot.
Nope. He was traded to the Boston Celtics today for what might be the total population of a small town.
The makes Boston with Paul Piece + newly acquired Ray Allen and + newly acquired Kevin Garnett = Eastern Conference Champions. Danny Ainge has finally done something great for that team and Celtics fans have to be passing out all over the country with the trifecta of weapons they now have.
There are two ways this affects the Suns: The first is that we don’t get him, which really sucks after getting excited. But the second thing, which is only way not getting him is good, was he went to the Eastern Conference and not the Lakers or any other West team.
So it should be an interesting Finals next year when the Suns face off against Boston. That could happen and I’d be quaking with excitement if it did.
What do you think of the trade? Good for the Suns? Are you disappointed?

Although I’m still unsure whether giving up as much as we might have had to get give up to get Garnett would be worth it, I’m pretty unimpressed with this offseason. Although there are some positives to freeing up cash and getting a veteran like Grant Hill, nothing has helped us to undeniably reach the championship level. Specifically, nothing done that will help us beat the Spurs in a best of 7 series.
I agree with Adrian, the Suns effort thus far is disappointing at best. We still have no defensive answer to Tim Duncan and no one can really argue that they’ve improved at all. They added Grant Hill and lost Thomas (one of our better interior defenders). Not sure what this means, but at this point I’m predicting another 60 win great regular season and then a conf finals exit.
I honestly don’t think Kurt Thomas or no Kurt Thomas will hurt us against the Spurs. I am pretty confident that Amare will be a better overall player, and that means defensively, next season.
I still think the addition of Grant Hill makes us a better team, even with losing Kurt. I am not sure how will fare against the mighty Spurs…but I think our lack of another scoring options besides Nash and Amare hurt us against them…and Hill will be a huge help there.
