A tragedy
July 27, 2007 by Mike Olbinski
It’s amazing how a normal afternoon can turn so tragic and devastating in the wink of an eye. The news that the Channel 15 and Channel 3 helicopters crashed into each other, killing all all four people inside, is just a sad and horrible turn of events.
Channel 15 lost pilot Craig Smith and photographer Rick Krolak, while Channel 3 lost pilot Scott Bowerbank and photographer Jim Cox. On behalf of the community here at ASFN, the people and the writers, we offer our thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of these poor news reporters.
There is something about the local news personalities that sort of bonds you with them. They are our eyes and ears, the people on our TV’s telling us what is going on, in ours home almost, covering breaking and devastating news. When this kind of thing happens to them, while they are in the line of duty, it just hits you hard. Not to mention that they were chasing a hijacking idiot who intentionally rammed a police car. They were doing their jobs, helping police, just like they always do.
Again, this is a very sad day for all of Arizona and our hearts go out to the victims and their families.

Very sad.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends, families, and co-workers of these men.
sad sad accident….thoughts and prayers go out to families involved
It is a very sad thing that happened- it made all other news and problems for the day seem insignificant. I couldn’t believe it- it was amazing the news anchors were still able to report, when it was on the death of friends. My thoughts and prayers are with the families as well.
May Craig Smith, Rick Krolak, Scott Bowerbank and Jim Cox rest in peace…God bless them and their families…I’d like to join my fellow ASFN friends and offer my prayers and deepest condolences to their families…
Did not know them. Will offer up my prayers. Terrible tragedy.
