Yawn Marion

Date June 13, 2007 by Mike Olbinski

See that? I combined how I feel about the NBA Finals with Shawn Marion. That’s mad writing skillz right there.

So yeah, 3-0 Spurs, and the last final score was 75-72. Are you kidding me? That’s like a Phoenix Mercury versus Houston Comets total. Who could possibly watch that ugly of basketball?

I feel bad for the Spurs, because they are a great team. And I mean that. Great. The number of titles they’ve won in the past five years is proof. They are one of the best teams in a long time.

But they are also so very boring. And I love basketball for just how great the sport is. I’ll watch almost anything, but not this. It’s too bad really.

And finally, to connect the dots above to Marion, let’s talk about him. He’s been in the trade rumor mill again as always this time of year. I love him. He has such talent and ability. But the one thing he can’t do is create his own shot. And for the money he’s making, he should be able to do that.

When Amare and Nash are getting the focus of the defense and nothing is happening, Marion could be that guy to post up on the weak side or drive it to the bucket. Like a Rasheed Wallace, or Kevin Garnett. In the playoffs we could have used that type of offense.

Now, you can’t trade him for crap, I agree there. But I’ve been through too many “early exits” from the playoffs the last few years to care too much. I want a title and I want it soon and I want it with Steve Nash. If you have to trade Marion to get another top player, then it should be done.

I know he’s got the rebounding, blocking and everlasting stamina skills. But with Nash and Amare, you are always going to be good, you just need a piece or two to finish it. Raja Bell has been key on defense, so you can’t lose him. The 5th guy, who cares.

But Marion…I love him, but if the right player can be found, pull the trigger. We have to do SOMETHING to win that championship.

The sadder thing is, while we all love Boris, how great would Joe Johnson have been this season for us? A third scoring threat, a great defensive player.

Ugh.

I agree with the Joe Johnson take. How good would this team be if we still had him? The only thing is this team would probably have zero dollars for a big man if that was the case.

Marion is an oddity in the NBA. Nobody puts up the number he does at the SF position yet he can’t really create his own shot I agree. You can’t give up an All-star without an All-star in return though. I just done see any scenario in which that makes us better.

Can the right player be found? I guess stranger things have happened in the NBA during the off-season.

Garnett would kill D’Antoni’s run game, wouldn’t he?

And who would you give up to get him?

I’d give up about everyone except Bell, Amare and Nash to get him. He can run, and he can do everything Marion can except NOT be able to get his own shot :) He can post up and we’d be a sick team with him.
