Marion’s Time

Date June 26, 2007 by Mike Olbinski

If the reports are true, and that is a big IF considering how things have changed every few hours this week, but if they are true, the Suns acquiring Kevin Garnett hinges on Shawn Marion.

Jim Gray reports that Garnett would be traded here, and Marion to the Celtics and Boston gives some players and their 5th pick.

The only way the deal works for everyone is if Shawn accepted an extension from the Celtics in order for them to keep him in Boston for a long time. Otherwise, he can just opt out next year and leave them with nothing.

This is such an interesting situation you don’t know where to start. If Shawn doesn’t do it and Garnett doesn’t end up here, it’s likely Marion will feel it this coming season. He felt under-appreciated last year, just wait until this year.

This Suns team wants to win. The fans want to win. Garnett is the ticket. But if Marion stays put, nothing happens and our visions of Nash, Amare and Kevin running to the Finals vanishes.

Please Shawn. We love you. You’ve done so much for this franchise. You’ve been my favorite player for your entire career here. You excited us, wowed us, made us laugh.

Time to do one more thing.

Boston would be perfect for you. All the talk every year about not being in the spotlight, or not getting your due. Well here it is. You and Paul Pierce leading the Celtics to the playoffs. A storied franchise wants you there.

It’s time for a new, fresh start Shawn.

We love ya. We’ll never forget the Matrix. But it’s time to part ways.
