The Suns get a new GM

Date May 31, 2007

Mike D’Antoni should now be able to focus entirely on coaching next year as the Suns announced that Steve Kerr will be their new General Manager.

The only thing Steve Kerr has done since his playing days is be a color commentator for NBA games. All I know about him is that he played for UofA (and I’m an ASU fan) and then played for the Spurs among a few other teams.

Actually, he did play for the Suns for 26 games back in 1988-89. Now I know that.

The Wonderful Whizard of Az

Date May 30, 2007

We’re off to see the Whizard…the wonderful Whizard of Az. Certainly on the advent of June there is great hope among all 32 NFL franchises that the brand new season will bring fortuitous winds, sunny skies and a golden brick road to the 2008 Super Bowl. In Arizona there is fresh optimism for an NFL franchise that has been mired in failure and misfortune virtually for decades on end. At the center of that optimism is the brand new head coach, Ken Whisenhunt, who in my opinion, has already established himself as the most intuitive and intelligent coach the Cardinals have had since Don Coryell. Here are the reasons why:

Kobe in purple?

Fraking Bill Simmons.

Have you ever read this guy? He’s a brilliant writer for ESPN.com. He’s funny, intelligent and just a bit weird, which makes a combination that is deadly fun to read.

With Kobe just outright telling Steven A. Smith that he wants a trade, Simmons quickly grabbed his pen and came up with seven possible trades and counted down to the top one.

Kobe to the Suns.

It never rains but it pours

Wow.

What a week to be a Suns fan.

My stomach can’t take anymore kicks to it. Stop. Please. The next thing you know the Suns will trade Amare and completely ruin me.

As Peter Krause said on one of my favorite all-time TV shows, Sports Night:

“Sometimes you just stand there, hip deep in pies.”

It sure feels like I’ve been hit with an entire bakery full of them. And I know all the Suns fans out there agree.

The bitter end

Date May 18, 2007

The post-game comments by Steve Nash said it all.

“I don’t know what to say,” said Nash. “It would be wasted words. It’s very difficult for us to finish the season like this.”

Nash was about the lowest I’ve ever seen him. Beaten down. Run through the mud. Ragged.

It’s funny. The NBA officiates the game differently in the playoffs. Suddenly you can yell at the refs more and not get called for a technical foul. And yeah, you can hand-check, bump and grab Steve Nash all night (Bruce Bowen) and not get called for any of it like you would during the regular season.

Here we go

Do or die. Win or go home.

The old sports cliche seems to go “This game is the biggest game of our lives.”

Well tonight, for the Suns, this IS the biggest game of their lives. If they win, they can force a Game 7 at home on Sunday and be that much closer to an NBA Championship.

Can they win? As they’ve proven in the last two games, they can beat the Spurs on the road and then can almost beat them at home with two top players missing. The Spurs have to be a little unsure of themselves right now. A made three or two and the Suns would be the ones up 3-2 right now.

All guts, no glory

What a game from the Phoenix Suns.

What an amazing first 45 minutes.

What a heartbreaking final three.

The Suns ground it out. Steve Nash showed why he should have been named MVP yet again. He willed his team to come out with energy and hold onto the lead as long as possible. He made great passes, great shots and just did all he could.

But it wasn’t enough. You could tell when he threw up a flip shot layup towards the end that had no chance of going in the basket. He never would have shot that with Amare on the floor. His team had run out of gas, run out of all the adrenaline from the first half and it was done.

I just wanted to pass along some brilliant articles around the internet today written by some pretty well-known guys. The amount of uproar over this decision by the NBA has been more than I’ve ever seen in my life.

Black Wednesday

Date May 16, 2007

So I’ve had a chance to sleep, get some rest and try to come to terms with the league’s decision yesterday to suspend Amare and Boris.

You know what? I’m still off the wall upset. It’s depressing. Even Lost being on tonight can’t cheer me up.

I just keep going over it in my head. Baron Davis knocks Derek Fisher to the ground, nothing happens. Bruce Bowen introduces Steve Nash’s groin area to his knee, and nothing happens.

Two Suns players take a short walk towards a non-fight, and they are screwed.

No breaks

Date May 15, 2007

If the Phoenix Suns end up beating the San Antonio Spurs in this series to move on to the Western Conference Finals, it will be in spite of more adversity than one team should have to take.

A bloody nose. A kick to the groin. A check worth of the best players in hockey. And now two suspensions.

The Spurs have kicked the crap out of the Suns. Yet the series is tied at 2-2.

Now the league has decided to stick to their ridiculous rules and suspend Amare and Boris for Game 5. Robert Horry is gone too, but please. It’s not even close to the same thing.
