Once again my annual “Best Available Player” disclaimer. Most teams simply can’t go that way because a limited cap forces them to address their needs.
When a multiple position need is specified, like DB, it signifies the team needs help at multiple positions under that designation, in this case CB and S. The primary need is listed first.
Some teams, like Atlanta, have so many openings they could draft anyone and should take the best player. Read the rest of this entry »

Setting up a draft board is one of the hardest tasks in the NFL. Do you weight it toward your needs? Do you take the top guy on it if a need guys is rated almost as highly? This isn’t a whole board, but it gives some idea of whom I would consider worthy of selection in the first 3 rounds.
I have dropped a few guys from Round 1, knowing they will be gone. Some I have included will undoubtedly be gone as well. I know some of these candidates are a round higher than others rated them. Read the rest of this entry »

Well, for all you would be draft gurus, here’s a few thoughts on the upcoming event that should hold true for at least a few more years.
Drafting by Position
Simply put, it’s easier to target some positions than others. The supposed skill positions are the toughest historically to judge. Some of these considerations are well known, for example you can likely get a good running back deep into the draft. Other considerations are a little murkier. Read the rest of this entry »

Despite this being a thin red line, I fully believe this unit may be among the top performing groups well before next season draws to a close.
Safeties
Overview
Holt was a bust, plain and simple. Add injuries to Adrian Wilson and Wilson Aaron Francisco and it’s no surprise this unit did not have much positive impact last season. Read the rest of this entry »

Again a simple reminder; games are won at line level. The Cards have more impact players on the defensive side of the ball. That said, the addition of a few key players to free up the existing players could make a good defensive team great.
Defensive Linemen
Overview
A successful defensive line pressures the passer and shuts down the run. It forces the quarterback into bad throws that lead to interceptions. If it can shut down the run, it enables both safeties to play deeper increasing turnovers and preventing big passing gains.
Sadly, last season the Cards had little success consistently stopping the run or pressuring the passer. There were flashes of success, but the hallmark of a good line is consistency that lets other units’ players worry about their responsibilities. Read the rest of this entry »

Look for the Cards to show a great deal more of their 3-4 defense, as they figure to add a few more pieces this off-season who fit that mold.
Linebackers
Overview
The Cards tried to play a 3-4 last year, but simply lacked enough personnel who were well suited to that system. This hurt the blitzing schemes. It left too many holes underneath in pass coverage. Few holes in the line were plugged quickly enough. The system needs quick OLBs and versatile guys in the middle.

After Cal’s take down of Washington and the debacle that was technically considered a game between Arizona and a JV school from somewhere in the northwest, the Pac-10 tournament is in full swing.
#1- UCLA
#9- Cal
A rematch that could not have been written better. After a controversial 1 point victory for the Bruins last week, Cal has a chance for redemption. So how does a 16-14 team in Cal present a legit problem for the Bruins?

It’s March, let the Madness begin.
Now is the time where some teams play their way into the NCAA tournament, while many more play their way out.
For th
e PAC-10, the tournament looks to be as competitive as ever, with the conference looking to get as many as 7 teams into the field. Seventy percent of the conference in the dance, percentage wise would be an all-time record.
However, that is not the only history the PAC-10 is looking to make. The tournament committee has never selected a 9-9 PAC-10 team to go to the big dance. This year, if certain teams perform well, there could be as many as 3.
So without further ado, here is a break down of what could be the most exciting PAC-10 Tournament in recent memory.

This may be the toughest position to play in the NFL. Injuries are frequent so depth is critical. Self-confidence is easily lost and hard to recover. No position is harder to draft or successfully fill.
Cornerbacks
Overview
No group took a bigger beating than these guys. The fact that Antrel Rolle was a safety was clear after his second year, but he continued to be played out of position. He will move there this year. Green likely will make it through free agency and start opposite Hood unless a corner is chosen in round 1 of the draft.

It’s nice to be starting from a position of strength and no team in the league has a better set of two primary receivers than Boldin and Fitzgerald. That said, the addition of a speedy receiver who can spread the field will only enhance the effectiveness of these two stars.
Wide Receivers
Overview
Every
team in the league would love to have even one of the Cards’ top 2 receivers. There are bigger threats in the league, like Randy Moss, but no receivers are better at making the big catch and sustaining a drive. In fact, they are so good that with an accurate quarterback, the Cards can use up the clock nearly as efficiently passing, as they can by running the ball.
The next receiver in line is Johnson and while some want to retain him, my feeling is that he will be overpaid by another team. The Cards can’t afford to compete with that as I see him as overrated.
